How to Start the Camping Season Right

Petrichor: the smell of rain and earth fill your nose as you step outside of your camper with your fresh cup of coffee. The sun is peaking through the tree line; wisps of fog layer the horizon. A hint of smoke professes its presence from a nearby campsite. It’s camping season, and for some, it’s better than any significant holiday combined. If you’re new to the camping/RV world, or you just want a refresher, this list includes some things you need to start the camping season right and have a less-stressful transition to the season.

Double Check Batteries

All batteries are essential when a good portion of your camping/RV experience needs artificial lights, especially if you camp in campers and RVs. Be sure to check the strength of your batteries in your RV and trailers, if the connection in wiring is strong enough if the battery(s) have corroded, and if they are up-to-date and not expired.

Prepare Water Systems

The water system in your camping setup plays a critical role in your RV/trailer maintenance. To prepare for spring from winter, you will need to flush all antifreeze from your plumbing system and sanitize the water so it will be safe for you and all who inhabit your campsite.

Check your water pump and replace it if needed.

Check Tires

Be sure to add air to tires periodically when they’re low; tires can naturally lose air pressure when left stationary or a shift in temperature changes throughout the year. Check for cracking or any punctures before you haul your unit anywhere, especially if it hasn’t moved for an extended period. Also, be aware of any debris lurking next to the tires that could potentially pop them. Take the time to rotate your tires if necessary, and always remember to inspect your spare tire(s) for any reason, as mentioned earlier.

Replace Air Filters

While de-winterizing your unit, don’t forget to change the air filters from last year. Though this step may seem small or insignificant, changing the filters plays a vital role in your air quality and the overall maintenance, which would be beneficial if you ever decide to resell or trade your RV/camper in the future.

Check All Windows and Doors

An economical way to conserve energy and your energy bill would be to check the sealants around your windows and doors for drafts. Inspect them periodically and make sure you’re not leaking money out of the cracks! It also helps keep bugs out of the unit, especially when it’s sitting idle for the off-season; no one likes stink bugs and ladybugs.

Always Be Prepared

You never can know what will happen while you’re out and about camping. Always store a substantial amount of first aid kits, extra sanitation supplies, dried and air-tight sealed pantry items, dried firewood, firestarters, and additional lighters/matches. Of course, you can deviate and add more items to your list of prepared items, just know where everything is, and have an inventory list of everything you have.

Check Propane Tanks

Remember to check your propane tanks to be up-to-date and full, ready for your camping season! You can use this article to learn more about how to inspect your tank(s).

Make Reservations Early

Even though this is the last topic on this list, it is one of the first things you should do! Wherever your heart guides you to visit, always make your reservations for your camping spot(s) as soon as you can so you can get your slot and relax until your adventures await!
